View questionsWhich scan tool do I need?
Choose by the vehicles you will use it on, the systems or service functions you need and how often you expect to use it. A basic OBD2 reader suits engine warning-light checks. ABS, airbags, transmission, body modules and service functions normally require a suitable single-make or all-makes scanner.
The quickest starting point is the Product Selector or the scan-tool guide.
Will a particular scanner work with my vehicle?
Compatibility depends on the exact tool, vehicle make, model, year, engine, original market and the system or function required. A scanner can communicate with one part of a vehicle without supporting every module or procedure.
For a specific check, send the full vehicle details and tell us exactly what you need the tool to do. A request such as “2018 Ford Ranger 3.2 diesel, ABS fault codes and ABS bleed” is much more useful than just “Does it work on Ford?”
Does a 16-pin diagnostic socket mean the vehicle is fully OBD2 compatible?
No. The familiar socket is a useful clue, but it does not prove that a generic OBD2 reader will communicate correctly or that it can access systems beyond the engine. Older vehicles, Japanese imports and vehicles built for different markets can vary. See the OBD2 guide for more detail.
What is the difference between an OBD2 reader and a full-system scanner?
A basic OBD2 reader is mainly for standard engine and emissions fault codes, live data and warning-light checks. A full-system scanner can provide access to supported modules such as ABS, SRS airbags, transmission, body control and electronic parking brake, along with vehicle-dependent service functions.
Will every advertised function work on every vehicle?
No. Functions such as DPF regeneration, battery registration, injector coding, electronic parking brake, steering-angle calibration and active tests are vehicle-dependent. A tool supporting a function somewhere in its coverage does not mean the same function is available on every make, model and year.
Can I use the scanner on more than one vehicle?
Most standalone scan tools are not locked to one vehicle and can be used across the makes and models included in their coverage. Coverage still varies between vehicles. App-based products, specialist platforms or subscription services can have product-specific account or licence rules, so check the individual product page.
Will a scan tool tell me exactly which part to replace?
Not usually. A fault code identifies the circuit, system or condition the vehicle has detected. It does not automatically prove that the component named in the code is faulty. Wiring, power supply, vacuum leaks, mechanical faults and related sensors can produce similar symptoms. Codes and live data are the starting point for diagnosis, not a guaranteed parts list.
Does clearing a fault code fix the problem?
No. Clearing a code removes stored information and may turn off the warning light temporarily, but it does not repair the underlying cause. If the fault is still present, the code or warning light will normally return.
Will a car scanner work on a motorcycle?
Not automatically. Motorcycles commonly need dedicated software and the correct brand-specific connector. Fitting a physical adapter to a car scanner does not create motorcycle coverage. Use a scanner specifically designed for the motorcycle makes you need.
Do your tools work with Japanese imports?
Many do, but Japanese imports need a proper compatibility check. Protocols, model names, engines and module coverage can differ from NZ-new or export-market versions of what appears to be the same vehicle. Send the exact vehicle details and required function before ordering when coverage is important.
Are software updates included?
Update terms depend on the product. Many handheld scan tools include free manufacturer updates, while some app-based, professional or connected products can use subscriptions or platform fees. The individual product page should state the update arrangement. Contact us before ordering if that information is unclear.
Do I need a laptop, phone or internet connection?
It depends on the tool. Many handheld scanners work as standalone units once set up. Bluetooth and Wi-Fi products may need a compatible phone or tablet, while some tools require internet access for registration, software downloads, updates or online functions. Check the requirements on the product page.
Can using a scan tool damage my vehicle?
Normal code reading and live-data use with a suitable tool should not damage the vehicle when the instructions are followed. Advanced functions can change vehicle settings or operate components, so only run procedures you understand. Keep vehicle voltage stable during software updates, coding and lengthy service functions, and never disconnect the tool partway through an instructed process.
No scan tool covers every vehicle and every function. A recommendation is only as good as the information supplied, so include the vehicle details and the exact job you need to perform.
What payment methods do you accept?
Checkout may offer Visa, Mastercard, American Express, PayPal, Shop Pay, Apple Pay and Google Pay. New Zealand customers may also see bank transfer and Afterpay. The methods displayed during checkout are the options currently available for your order and market.
Is checkout secure?
Payments are processed through secure payment providers within Shopify's checkout. Stahlcar does not manually receive or store your full card number. As with any online purchase, use a trusted device and check that you are on the genuine stahlcar.nz website before entering payment details.
Can I get a GST invoice?
Yes. Stahlcar is New Zealand GST registered and can supply a GST invoice for your order. Check your order confirmation or account first, and contact us with the order number if you need another copy.
When will a bank-transfer order be processed?
The order is processed after the payment reaches the Stahlcar account. Bank transfers can take around 1 to 3 business days to clear, depending on the banks involved. Use the order number or customer name as the payment reference so it can be matched correctly.
Can I change or cancel an order?
Contact us immediately with the order number. We will make the change where possible, but an order cannot always be altered once it has entered packing, been dispatched or been sent to a supplier for fulfilment.
Why can the Trade Me price differ from the Stahlcar website?
Trade Me and the Stahlcar website are separate sales channels with different marketplace fees, promotions and selling costs. Prices can therefore differ, and website pricing is not matched against a Trade Me listing.
Can you supply products in bulk or for trade use?
Possibly. Send the product, quantity required, business details and expected timing through the contact page. Availability and pricing are assessed for the specific enquiry rather than through a general trade discount.
How are refunds paid?
Approved refunds are normally returned through the original payment method. Processing time after the refund is issued depends on the bank or payment provider.
Where is Stahlcar based?
Stahlcar is based in Auckland, New Zealand and operates as an online store. Most products shown as in stock are dispatched from Auckland.
Can I collect my order?
Customer pickup is not currently available. Orders need to be placed through the website with delivery.
Is shipping tracked?
Yes. Stahlcar's active shipping services are tracked. A dispatch email is sent with the carrier and tracking link after the parcel has been prepared and lodged. Check your junk or promotions folder if the email is not visible.
How long does delivery take?
After dispatch, New Zealand courier delivery is usually 1 to 2 business days. Australia is usually 2 to 6 business days, and other international destinations are usually 5 to 15 business days. Rural delivery, customs, weather, peak periods and local carrier delays can extend these estimates.
See the Shipping & Delivery page for current rates and more detail.
Do you ship internationally?
Yes, to the destinations covered by Stahlcar's active shipping zones. Enter the delivery address at checkout to see whether a rate is available. Some products or destinations can have shipping restrictions.
Are international duties and taxes included?
Import duties, taxes or handling charges may be collected by the destination country and are normally the customer's responsibility unless checkout specifically states otherwise.
Why has my order been sent in more than one parcel?
Orders containing several items can occasionally be split. An item may also be sent directly from a supplier when that avoids an unnecessary delay. Where this happens, you may receive more than one dispatch notification or tracking number.
What should I do if tracking has not updated?
Tracking can pause between scans, particularly during international handovers. Allow a little time for the next update. If the parcel has passed the expected delivery window or the tracking remains unchanged for an unusual period, contact us with the order number.
What if my parcel does not arrive or arrives damaged?
Contact Stahlcar with the order number and tracking details. For damage, keep the product and all packaging, and take clear photos of the parcel, label, packing material and item. Do not discard anything until the carrier issue has been reviewed.
What should I do if my product appears faulty?
Submit a return request with the order number, a clear description of the issue and any requested photos or video. Stahlcar products include a 12-month warranty against manufacturing faults during normal use. This sits alongside your rights under the New Zealand Consumer Guarantees Act.
We may troubleshoot the issue before arranging a return, as update, setup, power or compatibility problems can sometimes look like hardware faults.
I ordered the wrong or incompatible scan tool. Can I exchange it?
Contact us before sending it back. An exchange may be available if the product is complete and remains in as-new, resalable condition. For a non-fault exchange, the customer normally pays the return shipping and any difference in product price.
Compatibility is vehicle and function dependent, so an automatic refund is not guaranteed simply because a tool does not perform an unstated function on a particular vehicle.
Can I return a product because I changed my mind?
Change-of-mind returns are considered case by case and are not automatic. An approved return must be complete, undamaged and in as-new, resalable condition. The customer pays return shipping and a 15% restocking fee may apply to an approved refund.
The restocking fee does not apply to a valid fault claim where a remedy is required under the Consumer Guarantees Act.
Can I send a product back without approval?
No. Submit the request first and wait for the return address and instructions. Unapproved parcels can be difficult to identify and can delay the assessment.
What support does Stahlcar provide?
Stahlcar provides written support for product selection, setup, updates, connection problems, coverage checks and use of supported functions. Support is provided by email or through the website contact form rather than by phone.
Written support lets you include vehicle details, screenshots, fault messages and photos, which are usually essential for scan-tool troubleshooting.
Can Stahlcar diagnose or repair my vehicle remotely?
No. We can help you use the tool, understand what information it is showing and check whether a function should be available. A scan tool does not replace mechanical testing, wiring checks or an in-person diagnosis, and Stahlcar cannot confirm a repair from a fault-code description alone.
What information should I include when asking for help?
Please include as much of the following as possible:
- Order number and scan-tool model
- Vehicle make, model, year and engine
- Whether the vehicle is NZ-new or imported, if known
- The exact system or function you are trying to access
- The wording of any message or error shown
- Clear screenshots or photos
- The steps already tried and current software version
What if the product is more than 12 months old?
Contact us. The written warranty period does not automatically end any rights that may apply under the Consumer Guarantees Act. The appropriate response depends on the product, age, use and nature of the problem.
What is not normally covered as a manufacturing fault?
Damage caused by impact, liquid, misuse, incorrect connection, unauthorised modification or repair, or use outside the instructions is not normally covered where that damage caused the problem. Normal wear and consumable items are also treated differently from a manufacturing fault.
Do I need to keep the packaging and accessories?
Yes, particularly if you may request a non-fault exchange or return. Keep the box, case, cables, adapters, manuals, inserts and all supplied accessories. Missing or damaged items can affect whether a non-fault return is accepted and the amount credited or refunded.
Before ordering
Use the Product Selector, browse by vehicle or send the exact vehicle and required function for a coverage check.
After ordering
Include the order number, product model, vehicle details and screenshots so the issue can be assessed properly.
Still unsure?
Send the vehicle and the job, not just the badge on the bonnet.
Include the make, model, year, engine, original market if known, and the exact system or function you need. That gives us the best chance of pointing you toward the right tool.
