Detailed Nissan Leaf Battery Information Through the Leaf Spy App
The Stahlcar Nissan Leaf Spy OBD2 Tool is a Bluetooth Low Energy adapter selected specifically for use with Leaf Spy on supported Nissan Leaf and e-NV200 vehicles. It gives the app access to detailed high-voltage battery, charging, energy-use and diagnostic information that is not normally shown on the factory dashboard.
For many Leaf owners, this is one of the most useful tools they can keep in the car. It can help assess battery condition before purchase, monitor degradation over time, compare individual cell-pair voltages, check battery temperature and read supported vehicle fault codes.

The adapter itself is the communication link between the vehicle and the Leaf Spy app. It does not have a screen or diagnostic software built into it. The adapter plugs into the Leafβs OBD2 socket, while the connected phone or tablet displays the data and provides the available functions.
This is different from a normal generic OBD2 reader. Leaf Spy is designed specifically around the Nissan Leaf and can retrieve EV battery information that a standard engine-code app usually cannot access.

Battery State of Health and Capacity Information
Leaf Spy provides several figures used by Leaf owners to understand battery condition. These values should be considered together rather than relying on one number alone.

State of Health: An estimate of the traction batteryβs remaining capacity compared with its original condition.

Amp-Hour Rating: A battery-capacity figure that normally reduces as the battery ages and degrades.

Available Energy: Displays battery energy in GIDs and kilowatt-hours, providing more detail than the dashboard battery gauge.

State of Charge: Shows the batteryβs current charge level using information read from the vehicle.

Distance-to-Empty Information: Leaf Spy can calculate remaining distance to low-battery and reserve events using the efficiency value selected by the user.
Battery Health Is an Estimate
Leaf Spy reads values calculated by the vehicleβs battery-management system. These are extremely useful for comparison and monitoring, but they are not the same as removing and laboratory-testing the complete battery pack. Readings can move with temperature, state of charge, recent driving and battery-management recalculation.
Individual Cell-Pair Voltages and Battery Balance
Leaf Spy can display the voltage of each traction-battery cell pair, along with minimum, average and maximum voltage readings. The app can also present the results as a graph or histogram, making it easier to see whether one area of the battery is behaving differently from the rest.
A small difference between the highest and lowest cell-pair voltage is normal. The difference may increase when the battery is at a low state of charge or under load. A cell pair that repeatedly separates significantly from the rest can justify further investigation.
The app can also identify cell pairs where the battery-management system is operating a balancing shunt. This helps show when the vehicle is attempting to equalise cell-pair voltages.
One Screenshot Is Not a Complete Battery Test
Cell-pair readings should be considered at a known state of charge and, where possible, observed over time. A single reading taken immediately after charging or with a nearly flat battery may not represent normal battery behaviour.
Battery Temperature Monitoring
The app can display readings from the traction-battery temperature sensors, including minimum, average and maximum temperature. Earlier Leaf models may report a different number of sensors from later models.
Battery temperature is important because the Leaf uses an air-cooled battery pack rather than active liquid cooling. Repeated rapid charging, high ambient temperature and sustained high-speed use can raise pack temperature.
Temperature data is useful during long trips and repeated charging sessions, particularly when assessing whether another rapid charge is sensible. It can also show how slowly a warm battery cools after the vehicle is parked.
Charging History and EVSE Information
Leaf Spy can show the recorded number of rapid-charge connections and standard AC charge connections. These figures can provide useful ownership context when inspecting a used Leaf, although they do not prove exactly how the vehicle was charged during every session.
On supported vehicles and charging equipment, the app can also display the maximum current available from the connected EVSE and its reported supply voltage.
Charge-count information should be treated as one part of the vehicleβs history. A high number of rapid charges does not automatically mean the battery is damaged, and a low count does not guarantee good battery condition.
Energy, Range and Climate Data

Trip and Charge Logging
Leaf Spy can record trip and charging information, allowing battery and vehicle data to be reviewed later. The logging function can save data to a CSV file that can be opened in spreadsheet software.
Depending on phone permissions and app settings, GPS location can also be included in the log. This is useful for comparing energy consumption, battery temperature and vehicle behaviour across different roads, speeds or weather conditions.
The app can run in the background while connected to the Leaf, although continuous GPS logging can increase phone battery use.
Tyre-Pressure Information and Position Registration
On supported vehicles, Leaf Spy can display the pressure reported by each tyre-pressure sensor and provide low-pressure or pressure-difference warnings.
Leaf Spy Pro can also register tyre positions after tyre rotation or seasonal wheel changes. This allows the vehicle to associate each pressure sensor with the correct wheel position.
TPMS Coverage Varies
Tyre-pressure display and position registration depend on model-year support and the equipment fitted to the vehicle. The app developer notes that some TPMS functions are not available on every Leaf generation.
Diagnostic Trouble Codes
Leaf Spy Pro can read diagnostic trouble codes from supported Leaf control units and reset selected codes after the cause has been repaired.
This is useful when a warning message appears or the vehicle will not enter ready mode. The code can help identify which system detected the fault and provide a better starting point for diagnosis.
Leaf Spy Pro also includes the ability to clear the P3102 code that can be stored after a different traction-battery pack is installed, where the vehicle and procedure are supported.
Clearing a Code Does Not Repair the Vehicle
A fault code identifies what the control unit detected. It does not automatically confirm which component needs replacing. If the underlying problem remains, the warning or code will usually return.
Selected Vehicle Settings
Leaf Spy Pro can access several settings that would otherwise normally require specialist equipment. Availability depends on the model year.

Automatic Door Locking: Changes supported automatic lock and unlock behaviour.

Vehicle Sound for Pedestrians: Changes supported VSP sound settings on selected 2013β2017 Leafs. Nissan disabled this app function on later vehicles.

Dashboard Language: Changes the instrument display language on supported 2011β2017 Leafs.

Tyre Position Registration: Assigns the tyre-pressure sensors to the correct wheel positions where supported.
Setting Changes Are Model-Year Dependent
The presence of a setting in the app does not mean it will work on every Leaf. Only make changes that are supported by the exact vehicle and understood by the user.
Using Leaf Spy When Buying a Used Leaf
The traction battery is one of the most important and expensive parts of a used Nissan Leaf. Leaf Spy helps the buyer look beyond the dashboard capacity bars and advertised range.
Useful pre-purchase checks include:
- Record the battery state-of-health and amp-hour figures
- Compare minimum and maximum cell-pair voltages
- Check whether any cell pair separates significantly from the rest
- Review battery temperature
- Record rapid and standard charge counts
- Scan for diagnostic trouble codes
- Confirm the VIN and odometer information displayed by the vehicle
- Save screenshots or logs so several vehicles can be compared later
A Leaf Spy result should be combined with a normal road test, charging check, tyre and brake inspection, 12V battery check and confirmation that the vehicle meets the buyerβs real-world range needs.

The adapter hardware does not include the Leaf Spy Pro app. The app is purchased separately from its developer.

Phone, App and Connection Requirements
A compatible Android or iOS phone or tablet with Bluetooth Low Energy is required. Leaf Spy must be installed and configured to use the adapter.
The adapter is connected through the Leaf Spy app. It may not appear or connect in the same way as normal headphones or other Bluetooth accessories.
The phone supplies the screen and app processing. Internet access is needed to download or update Leaf Spy, but normal vehicle communication takes place directly between the phone, adapter and car.
Basic Setup
- Install Leaf Spy or Leaf Spy Pro on the compatible phone or tablet.
- With the vehicle switched off, plug the adapter into the OBD2 socket beneath the dashboard.
- Turn the vehicle on or place it in the mode required by the app instructions.
- Open Leaf Spy and select the correct Bluetooth adapter type in the app settings.
- Allow the app time to connect and populate the battery screens.
- Confirm that live values update before relying on the readings.
After use, remove the adapter if the vehicle will be parked for a long period. Any device left connected to a permanently powered OBD2 socket can contribute to 12V battery drain over time.
Vehicle Compatibility
The current Leaf Spy Pro listing supports Nissan Leaf models from 2011 through 2025. The 2026 Leaf was not yet verified by the app developer when checked.
Selected e-NV200 models are also supported by Leaf Spy, although available data and functions can differ from the Leaf.
Vehicle coverage, TPMS functions, setting changes and diagnostic resets vary by model year and market. The adapter is intended specifically for Leaf Spy use and should not be assumed to provide equivalent EV data on other vehicles.
What This Tool Does Not Do
This is not a standalone workshop scanner and does not contain built-in menus, a screen or guided diagnosis.
It does not test the high-voltage battery under laboratory conditions, repair battery cells, program replacement control modules or provide universal diagnostics for other makes.
Stahlcar supplies and supports the adapter hardware. Leaf Spy is developed and supported separately, and its interface, compatibility and functions may change through app updates.
