Choose by Function

Shop by the job

Choose a scan tool by function.

Pick the job, then compare tools across our range. From dedicated-make scanners and phone-based options to all-makes workshop tablets.

Narrow down the results

Compare more than the feature name.

One make or several?

A dedicated-make tool may be enough for one vehicle family. Configurable scanners cover chosen makes, while all-makes tools suit a broader mix. Start with your vehicle make when that is the priority.

App, handheld or tablet?

App-based tools use your phone or computer. A standalone scanner has its own screen. Compare the format that suits your work, not just the lowest hardware price.

What software is included?

Some tools include ongoing updates; others have a fixed update period or paid function access. Check whether a renewal adds updates or is needed to keep using the required function.

What does each function do?

ABS bleeding

A compatible function operates the ABS pump and valves as part of the vehicle's brake-bleeding procedure. It may be required after hydraulic work when the manufacturer specifies an automated bleed.

Check: reading ABS codes or activating the pump alone does not confirm the full bleed routine. Follow the manufacturer's procedure or use a qualified technician.

DPF regeneration

A suitable scanner helps investigate faults and supported live data, then requests a service regeneration when conditions allow. A DPF reset is not necessarily a regeneration function.

Check: the exact engine and regeneration routine. Regeneration burns soot, not accumulated ash, and does not repair sensor faults. High exhaust temperatures require the manufacturer's safety precautions.

Battery registration and BMS reset

Registration tells a supported vehicle that a new battery has been fitted. BMS reset is a broader label for battery-management procedures and can mean different things on different cars.

Check: changing battery type or capacity may need separate coding. Not every vehicle needs registration, and registration support does not guarantee battery coding.

Bi-directional control and active tests

Active tests command supported components such as a fan, fuel pump, window or relay. Observing the response helps narrow down a fault alongside codes, live data and physical checks.

Check: the exact module and test. Full-system diagnosis and service resets do not automatically include general active tests. Specialist cables depend on their software and supported vehicles.

Electronic parking brake service mode

On supported vehicles, EPB service mode releases or retracts the parking-brake mechanism for rear brake work, then helps restore normal operation afterwards.

Check: the pad-replacement or maintenance routine, not just EPB code reading. Some vehicles use a manual service procedure. Never assume the caliper can simply be forced back.

Injector coding

Where required, this enters a replacement injector's calibration code into the engine control unit. It gives that system the individual injector information used during operation.

Check: code entry for your engine and injection system. Viewing injector values or performing a cylinder cut-off test is not the same as coding. Injector coding is not ECU remapping.

Steering-angle calibration

SAS calibration teaches a supported system its straight-ahead reference. It may be specified after alignment, steering repairs or sensor replacement.

Check: the calibration or zero-point routine, not just a steering-angle data reading. A reset does not fix mechanical alignment or replace any separate calibration the vehicle requires.

Oil and service reset

A service reset updates the maintenance reminder after the required work is completed. Oil service, inspection and brake-service reminders may be separate procedures.

Check: the exact reminder. Some vehicles allow a dashboard reset. Clearing engine fault codes is not the same as resetting a service interval or fixing a warning light.

Check the vehicle before placing the order.

Match the make, model, year, engine and original market to the tool's coverage. NZ-new vehicles and imports with similar names can have different control systems.

Use the manufacturer's function list where one is linked from the product page. Confirm the actual procedure, required adapter and software entitlement. When the information is unclear, contact Stahlcar with the vehicle details and the job before buying.

Common questions

Will every tool in a function category work on my car?

No. A category groups products with that type of function on supported vehicles. A dedicated BMW tool does not provide its BMW service functions on a Toyota, and a motorcycle tool is not a passenger-car scanner. Check your exact vehicle and procedure on the product page.

Does the lowest price include everything I need?

Not always. Some products require a phone, computer, adapter cable or separate app. Standard Mucar BT200 service access differs from BT200 Max. ThinkDiag software packages have an included period followed by paid advanced access. Read the product details before comparing total cost.

Why do some tools appear in several categories?

Many scanners offer several service functions. Being in multiple categories does not mean every function works on every vehicle. Choose the combination of confirmed coverage, format and software terms that suits the work you need to do.

Does an all-systems scanner do every reset and active test?

No. All-systems describes diagnostic access to supported modules. Service routines, active tests, coding and programming are separate capabilities. Check each essential job rather than relying on the number of functions advertised.
